Paul Lapsley's 2010 Vintage Report | Share this on: |
A truly remarkable vintage, 2010 has shown itself to be one of the handful of vintages that will stay in my memory as being exceptional.
All the hallmarks that define a great year are in abundance, elegance, aromatics, fruit flavours, and structure of the wines, even more astonishing is the great consistency across the many regions of Australia.
The growing season started well with decent rainfall across most viticultural regions followed by strong vine growth and good flowering. This was despite the record heat-wave that was, thankfully, moderated by significant rainfall in the latter half of the month – a welcome relief for all.
Curiously, night-time temperatures were 1º-3°C higher than usual which, combined with the dry conditions, brought an early start to harvesting. Unlike other recent vintages though, most vineyards were ready and in great health.
Given the relatively benign conditions of this summer, we anticipated good aromatics, flavour and freshness, and that’s exactly what has come through.
